Completing Sentences with Clause and Phrases


            Question Pattern for Examination
 
Complete the Sentences Using suitable clauses/Phrases:-

                 Completing Sentences with Clause and Phrases


Too……to
The words too…to means ‘more than is necessary or desirable’.
Structure: Too + Adjective/ Adverb + to –Infinitive

For Example:
The students could not memorize the poem .It was too difficult for them to memorize.
I found the box in the room. The box was too heavy for me to carry.
He is too honest to tell a lie. 

So….that
‘So….that’ expresses a cause and effect.
Structure: So + adjective/adverb + that

For Example:
We were supposed to start our journey the next day. But it was so hot that we could not start the journey.
He is so short that he cannot reach the top of the almirah.
I am so strong that I can carry this heavy load.

 In order that/so that
“In order that / so that “ is used to indicate the purpose of an action.
Structure: In order that / so that + subject +can/ may +verb

For Example:
He studies  medicine so that he may be a doctor.
We should keep the environment free from pollution so that we may live a healthy life.
There are many obstacles in our way to success. We must work hard so that we can overcome those obstacles.

If/Provided/provided that/ providing that
First Condition
If +Present Simple, Future Simple
For Example:
If we waste our time, all evil thoughts will crowd our brain.
If it rains, I will not go out.
If you waste your time, you will suffer in the long run.

Second Condition
If+ Past Simple, Sub + would/could/might + base form of verb
For Example:
If he came, I would go
I would help him if he wanted
If he studied seriously during home quarantine, he would get chance in Dhaka University.

Third Condition
If +Past Perfect, Sub + would have/could have/might have + Past Participle form of verb.  
For Example:
If I had seen him, I would have told him the matter.
If you had started earlier, you would not have missed the bus.
If I had been a king, I would have helped the poor.

Till/ Until
“ Till /Until” is used to indicate when something will happen, begin, or end.
Till can be used both in affirmative and negative sentences but Until is always used in affirmative sentences.

For Example:
Please wait here till/until I come back.
Rina waited until she got her result.
They waited till we reached the station.

With a view to
 “With a view to” is used to suggest the purpose of an action.
Structure: With a view to + (Verb +ing)

For Example:
He came to me with a view to drinking a glass of water.
All of us have to work hard with a view to achieving success.
They came to you with a view to saying sorry.

Unless
Unless means the same as  ‘if… not’ (Negative if clause).
Unless is used  instead of  “if …not”  in conditional sentences of all types.

For Example:
We cannot prosper in life unless we make the best use of our time.
You cannot buy a car unless you have enough money.
You will fail in the examination unless you study regularly.

As /Since /Because
When As /Since /Because is used as a  conjunction of cause to express a reason, corresponding Tense is used in both sides.
Note: Present tense and future tense can be  used both sides.

For Example:
Since there was no more question to discuss, we stopped the discussion.
16th December is a red letter in our national history, because we achieved victory on this day.
Since the water of this bottle is not pure, you should not drink it.

Though /Although
Although / though both mean ‘in spite of something’

For Example:
Though the pen writes well, it is very costly. I cannot afford to use it.
I worked hard although I was sick.
Though he is very rich, he is honest.

Would rather
“Would rather ” is used to express comparison  and preference between two persons/things.

For Example:
To tell a lie is a great sin. I would rather die than tell a lie.
Sohel is a very good natured boy. He would rather stay at home than mix with the bad boys.
You would rather build your own house than live in a rented house.

Had better
“Had better” is used to express moral obligation.

For Example:
Rina’s dress looks very dirty. She had better buy a new dress.
It is raining outside. You had better take an umbrella.
Sheela is suffering from fever. She had had better see a doctor.

As if/As though
“As if/As though” is used to express the similarity between two persons/objects.
Note:    i) Present Simple + As if/ as though   +Past Simple
              ii) Past Simple+ As if/ as though + Past Perfect

For Example:
He always acts as if he were smarter than anyone.
He talks as though he knew everything.
He pretends as if he were a mad.

No sooner had….than/ Scarcely had…..when/ Hardly had …when or before
“No sooner had ………than / Scarcely had ……when / hardly had …when or before” is used to say that something  happens immediately after something else.

For Example:
No sooner had the students seen their teacher than they entered the class.
Scarcely had the students seen their teacher when they entered the class.
Hardly had the students seen their teacher when they entered the class.

Lest
Lest is used in order to avoid/prevent the risk of happening something.
Note: Subject+ should/might is used after Lest.

For Example:
A student has to study regularly lest he should fail in the exam.
The thief ran away seeing the police lest he should be arrested.
The students walked faster lest they should miss the class.

Used to:
“Used to” is used to express the past habits of a person.
Note: be/get+ used to+ (verb+ing)

For Example:
I used to swim in the river when I was a boy.
He used to do many harmful activities.
I used to bathe in the pond but now I have stopped.

It is time / It is high time
“It’s time/ It is high time” is used to say something in an emphatic way that it should happen or be done right now.
Past Simple Tense is used after it's time/it’s high time

Note to remember: If Subject is not used after it's time/ It is high time, infinitive form of verb is used after it’s time/ it’s high time.

For Example:
Corruption is an obstacle to our national development. It is high time we stood against corruption.
Patriotism is a noble virtue. It is high time to form this virtue in us.
Load shedding occurs because we cannot produce sufficient electricity. It is high time we stopped wasting electricity.

Since (Time indicating)
i) Present Simple/ Present Perfect Tense + since+ Past Simple
ii) Past Simple+ since+ Past Perfect.

For Example:
It is long time since we met together.
Time has its wings. It was five years since we had met last.
Many years have passed since we met together.


As soon as
“As soon as” is used to say that something  happens immediately after something else.

For Example:
The play will start as soon as the rain stops.
As soon as the mother heard the news, she cried loudly.
Panic seized me as soon as I heard his roaring voice.

Would you mind
“Would you mind” is used for asking politely for doing something.
Note: (Verb+ing) form is used after Would you mind.

For Example:
I have lost my cell phone. Would you mind giving me your phone to talk to my mother?
Would you mind having a cup of tea?
Would you mind telling the fact?

Adjective Clause
An adjective clause (also called relative clause) is a dependent clause that modifies a noun or pronoun. It tells which one or what kind. Adjective clauses almost always come right after the nouns they modify.

For Example:
I saw a man who was walking along the road.
The man who came here yesterday is my brother.
Our agriculture which is the main factor of our economy depends on water.

Noun Clause
Noun clause is a dependent clause that acts as a noun. It can be used as the subject, direct object, indirect object, object of a preposition, subject complement, or appositive.

For Example:
He confessed that he did the mistake.
What he said is unknown to me.
We know that the earth moves round the sun.

Adverb Clause
An adverbial clause is a dependent clause that functions as an adverb. That is, the entire clause modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.

For Example:
I have missed the 8 o’clock train. Do you know when the next train will arrive?
I saw a nice bird while I was walking in the garden.
Your parents will be happy when you have succeeded in life.

Proverbs
A proverb is a short, pithy saying that expresses a traditionally held truth or piece of advice, based on common sense or experience.

For Example:
United we stand, divided we fall.
A man is known by the company he keeps.
Where there is life, there is hope.
Faults are thick where love is thin.
Danger often comes where it is feared.
What is lotted  cannot be blotted.
A friend in need is a friend indeed.
Misfortune never comes alone.
Time and tide wait for none.
Morning shows the day.
Industry is the key to success.
Honesty is the best policy.
Life is not a bed of roses.
